geocaching for joy

geocaching for joy

her GPS is set for
unique coordinates
a homing device
that keeps her aligned
with stops on the way
she searches for
curiosity and wonder
and especially awe
these will clarify
her home ground

remember
the hide-and-seek
game from childhood?
you’re getting warmer
her brother would say
could he be trusted?
was he telling the truth?

her GPS offers
route choices—
shorter, more scenic
stop for snacks here
avoid traffic this way
take the country path
recalculate for joy

conduit of wonder

conduit of wonder

first light
creeps back
as our planet spins
it’s quiet out there
until the birds come
I hear twitters
and tweets
in the bushes
then they show
themselves, blinking
fast as though
rubbing their eyes
little red house sparrows
hummers greedy to
feed—eventually
a lament of doves
feast on seeds
dropped from the feeder
ten, fifteen
even more
busy on the ground
mostly safe
at our house
could be a hawk
or cat around
one predator
never here—
no guns now or ever
simply wonder
light
winged things
and luscious calm

simply be nobody

simply be nobody

you were tutored from
birth to be somebody
—somebody special
a ponderous weight

be content with unique
you are, after all—
having to be someone
divides this-that-is
into 10,000 things
adds the burden of
“mine” and “yours”—
no other creature
does this

simply be nobody
the world will spin on
with less suffering
buy a home, but don’t
claim you own it—
what does “owning”
mean, anyway?
earn a degree but
don’t claim a persona

instead, rest in this—
the undivided
ineffable wonder
of all that is
